Haruyuki Ogino received his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate in Engineering from the University of Tokyo, completing his PhD in 2012. In 2006, he joined the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI) (Japanese non-profit organization), conducting research on low-dose radiation risk and its reflection on radiation protection (e.g., dose assessment, surface contamination, exemption, optimization). After working as a Research Scientist at CRIEPI for more than 14 years, Dr. Ogino joined the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) as the Chief for International Affairs and Radiation Protection in 2019.
In 2016, Dr. Ogino joined the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) as Assistant Scientific Secretary on a two-year term, culminating in March of 2018. In addition to this role as Assistant Scientific Secretary, he was also an Associate Editor for the Annals of ICRP (Publications 133–139).
Dr. Ogino received the Best Poster Award at the 4th European IRPA Congress in 2014 and the Incentive Award from Japan Health Physics Society in 2015.
He was the Secretary General of the Asian and Oceanic Association for Radiation Protection (2010-2014), the Secretary of International Affairs Committee of Japan Health Physics Society (2013-2015), and a member of International Collaboration Committee of U.S. Health Physics Society (2015-2018). Since 2019, Dr. Ogino has been a member of ICRP Task Group 114 on Reasonableness and Tolerability in the System of Radiological Protection, a member (alternate) of the IAEA Radiation Safety Standards Committee (RASSC), a member of the IAEA Topical Group on Radiation Protection and Transport Safety (RTTG) of the Asian Nuclear Safety Network (ANSN), and a member of Expert Group on International Recommendations (EGIR) of Committee on Radiological Protection and Public Health (CRPPH) of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA). He is also a member of the Secretariat of Japan Radiation Council, and the designated individual by NRA as the Special Liaison Organization in Japan to the U.S. National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP).
