Honouring Marie Claire Cantone, Opening Doors for the Next Generation

Marie Claire Cantone was a scientist, educator, mentor, and long-standing member of the international radiological protection community. Throughout her career, she believed deeply in bringing people together, supporting young professionals, and advancing greater inclusion and gender balance within the field.

Following her passing, ICRP and Marie Claire’s family established the Marie Claire Cantone Fund to carry those values forward.

Made possible through an initial €100 000 contribution from her family, the Fund supports emerging professionals by helping them participate in ICRP activities and become part of the international community Marie Claire helped to build.

Creating Opportunities

For many emerging professionals, the cost of international travel, registration, and accommodation can put important professional opportunities out of reach.

The Fund helps remove those barriers, with particular emphasis on supporting ICRP Mentees, women in radiological protection, and professionals/scientists from underserved regions.

Support can enable recipients to attend ICRP Symposia and other activities, contribute to international discussions, build professional networks and mentoring relationships, and bring new knowledge and connections back to their organisations and communities.

Impact in Practice

In 2025, ICRP held an online webinar to raise funds to support in-person participation at ICRP 2025 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. One of the professionals supported through that event was Harriet Kisembo from Uganda, who attended ICRP 2025 in Abu Dhabi.

Coming from a low-resource setting, international conferences always felt out of reach. I longed to be part of the global conversation on radiation protection, but the costs made it impossible. Being supported to attend ICRP 2025 changed everything. For the first time, I felt seen, included, and able to contribute. I returned home with renewed purpose and new ideas, and I am now sharing what I learned with my students, colleagues, and community. Support like this does not just help one person — it creates a ripple effect.

— Harriet Kisembo, Uganda

Harriet’s experience reflects the purpose of the Fund: creating opportunities that extend far beyond a single event and strengthening radiological protection where it is needed most.

Help Sustain Marie Claire's Legacy

The Fund is held separately from ICRP’s general resources and will be supported through contributions from individuals and organisations, selected ICRP activities, and other initiatives.

Every contribution helps create opportunities for talented people to learn, participate, contribute, and become part of the future of radiological protection.
