ICRP Main Commission Meeting
1962 May 8-12, 14,15,17,18 Stockholm, Sweden
During this Commission meeting, extensive discussion was held over several days regarding the work progress of Committee/Commission reports, reports from ICRU regarding dose units, as well as external and internal affairs of ICRP.
The Commission received reports from its technical Sub-Committees and made the following decisions:
Committee on RBE – The Commission agreed to dissolve this Committee after its report is published due to having fulfilled its obligations.
C2 – Discussed the RBE report and other topics on the subject of dose measurement. Is currently awaiting tasks from the Commission.
C3 – The Commission agreed to make all statements relative to the exposure of children under one heading.
C4 – Discussion was held regarding energy limit of high energy particle radiation. Limit was lowered from 10 MeV to 3 MeV.
C5 – Gave update on progress of waste handling report to the Commission.
The term ‘maximum permissible’ with respect to radiation dose was adopted for use in limiting occupational exposure.
The Commission decided that proposals for Task Groups could come from Committees or the Commission itself.
The Commission tasked the Secretary with drafting the report to the IEC and Congress on Radiology.
It was agreed to research more into the effects of high energy radiation in biology. The ICAO was contacted with regards to research of this scope.
The Commission agreed to present some “code-of-practice” material in the field of medical work to justify detailed reports from C3 and C5.
The Commission agreed on several topics that it would include in its 1962 statement which included: factual use of RBE, high altitude radiation, obligations to the medical profession, and dose limits to certain areas of the body.
The Commission accepted creation of a task force to determine if work at Oak Ridge is relevant to ICRP.
Outstanding items were scheduled to be addressed in Ottawa including but not limited to election of Vice-Chair, adoption of reports, and final draft of proposed statements.
