ICRP Main Commission Meeting

The beginning of this meeting involved much discussion regarding the administration side of ICRP. One important item was the discussion of a budget deficit and the need to acquire additional funding. Other matters discussed involved upcoming elections, replacing resigned members and rules regarding simultaneous membership in both the Committees and the Commission.
The Commission was presented current updates regarding the work of Committees 1-4:
C1 – The Commission discussed in detail the two reports
Spatial Distribution of Radiation Dose and
Radiosensitivity of Different Tissues. Concerns were raised regarding the similarity of the reports and the ramifications of new recommendations to change previous Commission recommendations. The Commission adopted both reports for publication in ICRP-8.
C2 – The Commission agreed to establish a Main Commission TG on the topic of
Dose from Labelled Compounds. It was agreed to publish the report in a clinical journal. Significant discussion was held regarding
Dose Limits for Bone Tissues. The Commission re-affirmed that beta-emitters, the dose to red marrow must not exceed 5 rems and for endosteal cells, no decision was reached pending a statement from C2 regarding calculations.
Regarding Limitation of Lung Dose, the Commission agreed that dose should be measured over the mass of the lymphatic system. Finally the Commission approved a proposal for a working party on
Residence Times of Bone-Seekers.
C3 - The Commission approved the report on Radiation Protection in Education pending the discussed amendments regarding scope were made. The Commission heard proposals of revisions for ICRP-3,4 and generally accepted proposals made by C3.
C4 – The Commission agreed that researching the practice of doctors in other countries regarding nuclear medicine would be useful and approved of efforts to collect relevant information to provide to C4. The Committee reported that the system of liaison officers approved in the previous meeting were serving their purpose very well.
The Commission’s proposal for paragraph 101 in
Report on Principles of Monitoring for the Radiation Protection of Workers was approved by the associated Task Group.
