The MC agreed to prepare celebratory documents for emeritus members: Dunster, Lindell, and Taylor.
The MC approved Preface, Basic Anatomical and Physiological Data for Use in Radiological Protection: Reference Values for publication as Guest Editorial.
The MC met with several Task Groups to discuss issues facing progress on research:
Age dependence in characterising the individual – Integration for weighting factors over different ages rather than individual calculations at separate ages is required.
Amendments to ToR DOCAL, INDOS- Development of the voxel phantom was bordering original research (vs. evaluation of previous research) but was deemed as crucial for other tasks.
Approval of ToR Aircrew/ICRU – Further increase collaboration efforts with ICRU and harmonise ICRP effective dose and ICRU units per unit fluence.
Amendments to ToR Space radiation – Scientific Secretary to draft letter to NASA to inform organisation of purpose of ICRP Task Group.
The MC received report on progress of Recommendations at the start of the 21" Century and some of the following that were discussed were:
• Clarify definition of natural background radiation
• Introduction of ranking of tissue weighting factors
• Indicate that risk is approximately proportional for low doses vs high doses
• Introduce content regarding safety and security of sources
The MC received a summary of issues considered by the Task Group responsible for protection of the environment. The following issues were discussed:
• Protection of the environment is becoming an international focus and ICRP should take lead to develop a policy.
• Scope should include the entire environment and not just living population.
• The possible requirement of introducing a new Committee or Task Group.
The MC appointed Professor C B Meinhold as an Emeritus Member of the Commission.
The MC commissioned the production of an advisory paper to IAEA to respond to a consultation request from IAEA regarding radionuclides in commodities.
