Emeritus member Dan Beninson dies

2003-09-01

ICRP regrets to announce that for a second time this year, after the untimely death of Commission member Bert Winkler earlier this year, we have lost a dear friend and esteemed colleague, the Commission's Emeritus Member Dr Daniel J Beninson. Dan, as the entire radiological protection community worldwide knew him, passed away 21 August at the age of 72 years. A graduate in medicine from the University of Buenos Aires, he had also studied biophysics there and radiation biology at the University of California. Having directed the Argentinian Nuclear Regulatory Authority and chaired the National Atomic Energy Commission in Argentina, he was best known for his prolific international work, at IAEA, at UNSCEAR, and at ICRP where he was a Main Commission member for a very impressive 33 years (until 2001) and the Commission's Chairman from 1985 to 1993.
