Last week at the 64th Health Physics Society Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida, ICRP Committee 4 member Dr Nicole Martinez was honoured as the 2019 recipient of the Elda E. Anderson Award.
This distinction is awarded to a member of the Health Physics Society who exemplifies excellence in research or development, discovery or invention, devotion to health physics, and/or significant contributions to the profession of health physics. Dr Martinez received this honour at the Hilton Orlando on 11 July.
Dr Martinez is an Assistant Professor at Clemson University in the Department of Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences, where she teaches and conducts research related to environmental risk assessment and radiation protection. She is an author on 20 peer-reviewed publications and over 50 professional presentations. Her BS is in Applied Mathematical Sciences from Texas A&M University, and her MS and PhD are both in Radiological Health Sciences from Colorado State University. Prior to attending graduate school, she served in the United States Navy, first as an instructor at the Nuclear Power School, and then in the radiation safety division at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. After that she worked for General Physics Corporation monitoring, modeling, and advising on (mostly conventional) power plant efficiency.
In addition, Dr Martinez continues to promote ethics and diversity within radiological protection, and currently serves as president of the Women in Radiation Protection section of the Health Physics Society.
